Mogaveera community seeks ST tag

Staff Correspondent

‘Yuva sanghatane’ holds meet

Kundapur (Udupi district): Vittal Heroor, president of Karnataka Rajya Kabbaligara Sangha, said on Sunday that the Mogaveera community should be included in the Scheduled Tribes list.

He was speaking at the mega convention of Mogaveera (fishermen) community organised by the Mogaveera Yuva Sanghatane here.

Mr. Heroor said the fishermen community had been included in the Scheduled Tribes list in the States of North India but not in Karnataka. Unless the community organised itself, it would not be possible to acquire Scheduled Tribes status. Although the Ambigara Chowdaiah Research Chair was set up at Gulbarga University on January 18 this year, a lot needed to be done to ensure proper recognition to the 12th century saint-composer, Ambigara Chowdaiah, he said.

Satyanarayana Pawar, MP from Ujjain and president of All India Koli (Kabbaliga) Samaj, New Delhi, said that the population of fishermen community in the country was 12 crore. Yet, the community had remained backward because of lack of education. The community could not progress without the support of the Government. In Karnataka, this could begin with the inclusion of the community in the Scheduled Tribes list, he said.

Demands

Some of the demands of the community are: Mogaveera community should be included in Scheduled Tribes list; the facilities available to weaker sections of Mogaveera community in coastal areas should be extended to inland fishermen; subsidised loans at four per cent interest from nationalised and co-operative banks should be provided to the Mogaveera community, more number of houses should be provided under “Matsyashraya” scheme, facilities available for agriculture sector should be extended to fisheries, coastal area should be reserved for fishing activities and residential needs of fishermen and jetties should be constructed at Mangalore, Hejmady, Hungarkatte, Kodi Kanyana, Gangolli, Koderi, and Alvegadde.
