Andhra Pradesh
Many political parties and different organisations have been holding protest demonstrations and dharnas demanding the immediate arrest of criminals who murdered Ayesha Meera in a ladies hostel in Ibrahimpatnam. They are also raising doubts about the slow pace of investigation into the case. Though it is beyond doubt that the police will have to prove their sincerity by expediting the probe and bringing the culprits to book at the earliest, putting pressure on them can prove counter-productive. The police, under pressure, may arrest innocent people and produce them before the media as murderers. The police should be given a free hand in investigating the case. S.T.K. Parthasarathi Pinnamaneni Polyclinic Road, Vijayawada Book fair rowThe two-time postponement of the annual book fair, which usually commences on January 1, has disappointed many book lovers. The organisers should keep in mind that the annual examinations are very nearer to February and many students may not be able to visit the fair due to their preoccupation with preparation for examinations. It is desirable that the organisers pay necessary charges for hiring Swaraj Maidan for the book fair a year before, and get the required official commitment for organising the fair from January 1. K.L. Prasad Governorpet, Vijayawada Enact law to punish buildersThe new GO that the Government has issued relaxing the penal amounts specified under Building Penalisation Scheme have come as a major relief to many middle class people. But it is unfortunate that the Government has not said anything about bringing the builders and corrupt municipal officials, who are responsible for deviations in construction, to book. The authorities may be technically correct in saying that property owners have to own up responsibility for the deviations, but many middle class people can’t understand the nitty-gritty of building plans and would have purchased flats without being aware of the deviations. It is time the Government enacted a law to punish builders and officials for any deviations in future. P. Nandakumar Gollapudi, Vijayawada Build Venkaiah memorialMP Lagadapati Rajagopal’s Tiranga Run has, no doubt, helped project the contribution of Pingali Venkaiah to the designing of national flag. But he would have done well if he had decided to build a grand and fitting memorial for Venkaiah, instead of indulging in opulence to organise a run with huge prize money. Mr. Rajagopal should also pursue the issue further and get a portrait of Venkaiah installed in Parliament. The contemporary generation should be taught about the simple life that Venkaiah had led and what kind of a multi-faceted personality that he was, which would be the correct way of paying tributes to him. N.V.S. Lakshmi Labbipet, Vijayawada
