Sir, — Instances of passengers complaining about autorickshaw drivers harassing them and demanding fares in excess of the meter reading are on the rise. Many a time, the autorickshaw drivers refuse to take passengers. Lodging complaint with the Regional Transport Authority or the policemen on rude behaviour of autorickshaw drivers has not proved effective. About two years ago, the RTA introduced a system of pre-paid autorickshaw service at the railway station and KSRTC bus stand. The system stands discontinued, primarily owing to the negligence of RTA in monitoring it. It will be better if the same system is re-introduced. I request the authorities to bring back the pre-paid autorickshaw service in the interest of the people. J.F.D’Souza Mangalore Provide road dividersSir, — Vehicles coming from Ambalapadi to Udupi and the other way have to cross National Highway 17 at Ambalapadi bypass. Accidents occur at this junction as vehicles are driven at a high speed. The Highway authorities are requested to provide road dividers on this highway at the junction to prevent accidents. The municipal authorities and the Deputy Commissioner of Udupi district are requested to impress upon the Highways Department to hasten the process. T. Angara, Udupi All about Tata NanoSir, — Since its launch in January, Tata Nano is creating ripples across the world auto arena. Some fear that its affordability will spell a huge increase in number of vehicles plying on the already-congested Indian roads. Some are sceptic about the claims of the manufacturers that the Nano would pollute no more than the average two-wheeler and its safety standards were satisfactory. Meanwhile, taxi operators in Mumbai and autorickshaw operators in Bangalore are gearing up to trade in their vehicles for Tata Nano. Although it may be true that our roads will soon see a sharp increase in traffic and that the fight for parking space will worsen , the initiative of Ratan Tata in coming out with a car that breaks hitherto believed cost logic is commendable. Ayesha Aleem Bangalore Access to librariesSir, — Libraries are storehouses of knowledge and are highly useful, especially in institutions conducting research. At present, most libraries are closed at night. As a result, hardworking students are denied the opportunity to benefit from their resources. By providing more staff, libraries can be kept open throughout the day. This will ensure greater access to knowledge and information to people. P. Basavaiah Chitradurga Postal stationerySir, — The paper used in our aerogrammes is of poor quality. It is far inferior to those available in countries such as the U.S. and the United Kingdom. One of my friends recently received an Indian aerogramme in torn condition with a portion missing. The postal authorities in London, had in fact, taken care to put the pieces in a plastic envelope and even apologised for the mishap owing to mechanical sorting of mail. The Indian Postal authorities could do better to boost the image of the country. N. Raju Bangalore Increase free call limitSir, — Some months ago, the General Manager of BSNL, Bangalore, promised to double the free call limit from the present 50 a month for connections more than five years old. But this has not come into effect. I request the authorities to take steps in that direction. S. Kuppuswamy, Bangalore Readers can send their letters to: letters.mangalore @thehindu.co.in
