Snail’s pace: The construction of a bridge across Sangilipallam on Dharapuram Road in Tirupur progresses slowly.—

TIRUPUR: The construction of a bridge across Sangilipallam stream on Dharapuram Road, which began in October last year, is progressing at snail’s pace much to the heartburn of residents and motorists of the city.

After closing the arterial stretch for heavy vehicles during the last week of October, the highways department announced that it would complete the construction in six months.

Three months have passed since there is no visible progress on the construction.

The widened bridge at an estimated cost of Rs.1 crore is expected to ensure smooth flow of traffic, including movements of containers that use the stretch to reach Tuticorin port.

Highways department authorities point out that the delay was due to shifting of water pipes by the Tirupur Municipal Corporation and cables by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.

Lack of coordination among Government agencies and failure on the part of authorities in sorting out these issues before commencing the work has come in for criticism by the residents.

Traffic has been diverted since October and the vehicles have to go more than 2 km to reach their destination. Schoolchildren and patients travelling to Government Hospital have been affected.

Sources said that going at the pace it would take another six months to complete the work.

When contacted highways officials pointed out that there would not be much delay as the problems were sorted out and the TNEB and Corporation officials were on the job now.

They exude hope that the construction work would resume in a couple of days in full swing.

Three year delay

Interestingly, the commencement of the construction was delayed by three years after the Government allotting funds. The contractors were reluctant to take up the job considering higher wages, raw material costs in Tirupur.

The project cost rose to Rs.1.14 crore from initial estimation of Rs. 84.7 lakh. The bridge will replace the causeway on Dharapuram Road with 60 ft length and a width of 64 ft.

The bridge will have 5 ft pedestrian way on either side and facilitate four-lane for vehicular traffic.

A survey reveals that more than 30,000 passenger cars use this bridge a day. Officials say that the bridge required to be upgraded with six lanes but space constrains forced them to go for a four-lane one.

Similar bridge on Kangeyam Road across the Sangilipallam was thrown open for traffic six months ago. It was constructed with the help of Valam, an entrepreneurs’ initiative to crease infrastructure in Tirupur.
