Melbourne: Aiming to make his team play the first night Test within the next three years, Cricket Australia is taking a more scientific approach to make it possible, especially by producing the ball which could be used under the conditions. CA General Manager of cricket operations Michael Brown met Chief Executive James Sutherland on the project and said the research team would study the various effects and conditions on night cricket so as to find out which States would be appropriate venues. Four-day domestic games were played under lights in the late 1980s but players reported problems seeing the ball. “We’ve been talking about cricket balls for decades. Richie Benaud is famous for saying we can put a man on the moon but we cannot make a white ball that lasts 50 overs,” Brown said. “We have decided to take a methodical approach to solving the problems. We need to be serious about this because we are keen to see if it is possible,” he was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald. — PTI
