Three youths held for circulating fake notes

West Bengal and have come here in search of jobs


CHENNAI: Police arrested three youths from West Bengal on charges of circulating and possessing fake currencies in the denomination of Rs 500 rupees valued Rs 1.65 lakh on Sunday.

The offence came to light when a traffic police constable intercepted three youths, who were moving in a suspicious manner near the Ice House area.

Discreet inquiries revealed that they were from West Bengal and had come here in search of jobs. They identified themselves as Sheik (21), Najwa (20) and Naji Ul Sheik (22) of Malta district.

Persuaded

While coming in the train, the trio said, they met a person, who persuaded them to carry on a business from which they can make more money swiftly.

After offering their valuables and cash to the passenger, they received fake currencies valued at Rs 1.65 lakh.

Under pretext of purchasing

On arrival in the city, under the pretext of purchasing some consumable items in grocery shops and in a textile shop, the youths exchanged the currencies in the denomination of Rs. 500 notes and during one such occasion, a mobile patrol police team spotted and handed them over to the Ice House police.

Based on their confessions, the police seized fake currencies valued Rs 1.65 lakh.

It was found that they had exchanged about 10 such fake currencies in the last three to four days. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Mylapore) A.G Mourya said that preliminary investigations revealed that the youths had come here in search of a job with a builder.

The Ice House police registered a case.

The trio were produced before a city court.

Further investigation is on.
