NEW DELHI: Five persons including two minors died of asphyxiation when a consignment of jeans kept in their house caught fire at Welcome Colony here on Sunday morning. According to the police, the fire broke out around 5-30 a.m. when Mohammad Raftar (65), his wife Julekha (60), his relative Mehnaj (25), her one-year-old son Ali Mushtaq and Raftar’s granddaughter Zeba (7) were asleep on the first floor of the building. The jeans stocked on the ground floor caught fire following an electric short-circuit in the electronic meter. Those sleeping on the first floor were asphyxiated because of the smoke. The other occupants, Raftar’s sons Ishrar and Raees and eight other family members managed to escape. In all, four fire tenders were pressed into service and the fire was doused within half-an-hour. The local police have initiated inquest proceedings into the incident.
