Waste management drive by Delhi varsity

Staff Reporter

To raise awareness about hygiene, recycling

NEW DELHI: The Delhi University Students’ Union, which has declared the North Campus a no-smoking zone, will soon engage students in disposing of waste responsibly on the campus.

In the first such collaborative effort, the Social Service League and the Wildlife Society of St. Stephen’s College has tied-up with the State Environment Department to raise awareness about cleanliness, hygiene and recycling on the campus.

Starting this past weekend, students of St. Stephen’s and Hindu College initiated an orientation campaign based on the principles of reuse and recycling of waste. “With help from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi we will fan out to various parts of the North Campus and collect waste. The waste after segregation (plastic and paper) will be recycled by the Environment Department. We have support from several other colleges including Hans Raj, Ramjas and Sri Ram College of Commerce,” said St. Stephen’s College’s Social Service League secretary Pushraj V. Deshpande. Environment Department’s senior scientific officer B.C. Sabata said: “This is the first such collaboration with Delhi University. We have agreed to recycle their paper waste and turn the green waste collected into compost. The department is very happy with the collaboration and are looking into a long-term association.”

“While plastic waste will be taken care of by the MCD, paper waste will be recycled and used for a Delhi State Art Competition that we plan to organise on February 14. Later the paper waste will be converted into note books to be distributed among primary school children in government schools. ” said Mr. Deshpande.
