NGO addresses woes of beauty industry

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: There is a serious need to organise women workers in the beauty care business and provide them with better training and employment opportunities, non-government organisation Sampurna has said.

‘Need to organise women’

At a conference organised by Sampurna here over the weekend, its president Shobha Vijender said: “We want to organise girls and women working in beauty parlours. Despite working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. they only get paid a meagre amount of about Rs.1,500 per month. Moreover, they never get to move ahead by enhancing their skills since all work requiring skill is done by the owners themselves, leaving the workers to settle for routine work.”

“We are demanding an end to this exploitation in the unorganised sector by organising a union for these girls which will provide them skill enhancement and training opportunities in return for a nominal membership fee. In addition to organising these workers, Sampurna also wants their work to be treated with dignity and at par with other noble professions.

“There are about 25,000 parlours in Delhi, each employing an average of five to six girls. Considering the huge demand for beauty services in Delhi, there is a need to fulfil the workforce requirement by training the maximum number of girls and making them self-employed. This will not only give them a better life but also ensure that the beauty business does not get monopolised in the hands of the well-off beauty parlour owners,” said Dr. Vijender.

Seminar on Feb 5

As part of Sampurna’s two-tier programme to employ and train women as well as provide them with support against exploitation, the organisation is organising a seminar on February 5 for all those women who want to make a career in this profession.
