Move to set up aviation university: Minister

Action plan sought for city development

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M.Vijayakumar said here on Sunday that Kerala would have to exert pressure on the Centre for the establishment of a High Court Bench in the capital city. Delivering the inaugural address at the 14th annual conference of the Federation of Residents Associations, Thiruvananthapuram (FRAT), he said the Centre had failed to clear the proposal for a High Court Bench in spite of a unanimous resolution adopted by the Assembly and the completion of all the necessary formalities.

The Minister said the Centre had sanctioned Rs.500 crore for the development of the international airport in Thiruvananthapuram. “As many as five consortia had submitted tenders for the container transhipment terminal project at Vizhinjam. The project, estimated to cost Rs.5,340 crore, will catapult Thiruvananthapuram to the forefront of the South Indian States.”

Mr. Vijayakumar said the aircraft engineering unit of Air India was expected to start functioning in Thiruvananthapuram from March 1. He announced that the Rajiv Gandhi Aviation Academy here would start flight training next month. “Efforts are on set up an aviation university. Pointing out that many priority projects had been bogged down due to the controversy over land acquisition, he called upon residents’ associations to cooperate in making land available.

The former Union Minister O. Rajagopal called upon the State Cabinet to adopt a resolution demanding the setting up of a High Court Bench in Thiruvananthapuram. Mr. Rajagopal also highlighted the need for a flyover from the VJT Hall junction to East Fort.

The former chairman of the Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority P.K. Venugopal urged the State government and the City Corporation to work out an integrated action plan for the city.

A resolution adopted by the conference called upon all residents’ associations in the district to participate in the campaign for the High Court Bench. Senior Congress leader K. Karunakaran is scheduled to inaugurate the campaign in front of the Secretariat on February 8.
