Bangalore: A week after the outbreak of gastroenteritis in the Bharathinagar area, the number of people seeking treatment at the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) hospital dropped to 20, the lowest in the last one week, reported from the locality on Sunday. A large number of people had fallen ill in this locality since January 27 after people consumed contaminated water supplied through the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) pipelines. So far, more than 1,800 cases of gastroenteritis have been reported from the area. Cholera caseMeanwhile, one more suspected cholera case was detected at St. Philomena’s Hospital on Sunday. However, the hospital authorities said the man, who tested positive for cholera in a presumptive test, refused to get admitted to the hospital. Confirmed casesWhile six cases of cholera have been confirmed since Sunday last in and around Bangalore, more than 70 suspected cases are yet to be confirmed by the Public Health Institute. BBMP health officials said that precautionary measures such as distribution of tablets (used for purifying water), cleaning the area, improvement in the quality of water supplied by the BWSSB after plugging the leak from sewer helped in containing the disease.
