CHENGAM: About 200 people from the Thokkavadi near Chengam in Tiruvannamalai district staged a road roko on the Chengam-Tiruvannamalai Main Road demanding the police to book the culprits in an accident in which two youths were killed and nine others were injured. Police said that on Saturday night 11 persons from Thokkavadi went on a bullock cart to the nearby S Nachipattu to witness a musical fete organised on the occasion of consecration of newly constructed Selva Vinayagar Temple. While returning, during the wee hours on Sunday, a speeding vehicle on the Chengam-Tiruvannamalai Road hit the bullock cart and fled away from the spot. Anand (22) and Ravi (18) died on the spot. Nine others sustained grievous injuries and were admitted to the Chengam Government Hospital. Traffic blockedCondemning, the incident, 200 people from the Thokkavai squatted on the Chengam-Tiruvannamalai Road on Sunday wanting the police to identify the hit-and-run vehicle and arrest the accused. As a result, traffic on the Chengam-Tiruvannamalai Road came to a halt for more than three hours. AssuranceTiruvannamalai Additional Superintendent of Police Krishnamurthi, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sivaswamy and Chengam Town Inspector Chinnaraj rushed to the spot and held talks with the protestors. After an assurance, the protestors gave up the protest.
