VANIYAMBADI: A crackdown has been launched on brewing of arrack and sand quarrying in and around Tirupattur and the adjoining Vaniyambadi and Ambur in Vellore district and as a result, there is, of late, a lull in the illegal activities. Enquiries revealed that on clear instructions from Tirupattur Sub-Collector Ashish Kumar, the police have intensified raids in all interior rural pockets of Tirupattur. Residents and representatives of local non-governmental organisations at Tirupattur told The Hindu that brewing and sales of arrack in interior parts of the town were now under control. Raid in rural areasA couple of days ago, based on a tip-off, a raid was conducted in some rural pockets adjoining Madapalli in Tirupattur. Arrack mud pots, kept hidden in different spots, were destroyed. The Sub-Collector took everyone by surprise, coming to the spot personally by two-wheeler. During the course of the raid, four persons were arrested. Sand quarryingThe Vaniyambadi police said that on a tip-off, a raid was conducted on Saturday on illegal sand miners on the beds of the Mullai Lake running between Vaniyambadi and Alangayam. Three persons — Palani, Sivalingam and Nagaraj — were loading sand from the lakebed onto two tractors. The three persons were left after a warning. However, the two tractors were seized and handed over to the Vaniyambadi tahsildar. Vaniyambadi taluk officials said investigation was on.
