dated February 5, 1958: Administrative training

(From an editorial)

The Administrative Staff College of India which has commenced work in Hyderabad is designed to meet an urgent need. The scope of governmental activity has increased in recent years and industrial and commercial enterprises in both private and public sectors require the right men to staff them. They must have administrators possessed of constructive talents and the technique of leadership, able to plan ahead while not losing sight of points of detail, to deploy both human and material sources with skill and sympathy, and not least, to train up juniors to take their place in due course. Lack of such administrators may lead to serious consequences. It was in April 1949 that the All India Council for Technical Education set up a committee of experts to go into the question of education and training in industrial administration and business management and to prepare a scheme of management studies. In making its recommendations four years later, the committee urged the establishment of an Administrative Staff College in India on the model of the well-known institution at Hensley-on-Thames in England. This was agreed to and the Union Minister of Education in his capacity as Chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education appointed a committee to prepare plans and estimates for a staff college, which, thanks to the support of the Government of India, great business houses and prominent men in public life has begun to function in such a central place like Hyderabad.
