dated February 5, 1958: Classless society

The Prime Minister, Mr. Nehru, declared in Bombay on February 3 that the country’s goal was to set up a classless society. This would be achieved by a democratic and non-violent process, and not by the Communist way of “increasing class conflict,” he added. They would achieve this only by democratic ways, by preserving the independence of individuals and by peaceful means. The people would have to strive hard to reach their objective. Reiterating that society had to change according to changing times, he said casteism was another evil which suppressed the majority of society.
