Chennai: Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi of Delhi made full use of black’s king in the centre to crush Arun Prasad of Salem in the second round of the 45th Velammal National ‘A’ chess championship here on Monday. After two rounds, three players, International Master Swayangsu Satyapragyan of Indian Airlines, Grandmaster Deepan Chakkravarthy of Indian Oil and Negi of Air India are off to a flying start with two wins each. Eleven rounds remain to be played in this 44-player Swiss league. Vishnu Prasanna, a student of Loyola College, Chennai shocked Grandmaster Neelotpal Das of Kolkata with a decisive queen side attack. Gopal heldNational sub-junior champion Sethuraman of Velammal School, Chennai held Grandmaster Gopal to a fighting draw 55-move draw in a double-edged minor piece ending. Defending champion Surya Ganguly of Kolkata took a quick draw with the black pieces against Ratnakaran of Kozhikode from a French defence, exchange variation. Deepan Chakkravarthy outplayed Saptarshi Roy using an active king in an ending while Satyapragyan sacrificed a pawn and created an opening for his knight to defeat Venkatesh. In the game between the oldest and the youngest players of the event, the 48-year old Pravin Thipsay of Union Bank of India, Mumbai, also a seven-time National champion, won pawns at will to defeat the 1995-born Mehar Chinna Reddy of Andhra Pradesh. Pune Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte calculated deeper in the tactics that sparked from move 14 onwards to win an exchange and the game in 29 moves against Neeraj Mishra of Jamshedpur. Chennai International Master Baskar Adhiban nailed his city mate and guru Thandalam Ravi in 40 moves with a nice mating trick. Important results (round two): K. Ratnakaran 1.5 drew with S.S.
