Rangasamy dismayed by officials’ remarks

Special Correspondent

“They came in the way of Union Territory’s development”

PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Monday expressed dismay by certain remarks made by officials, which, he said, would hamper the progress of the Union Territory.

Mr. Rangasamy was speaking at the inauguration of a workshop on leadership quality improvement. He said it had been a big deficiency that the elected representatives of Puducherry were not given adequate powers to implement the decisions of the government.

The Union Territory could not achieve progress if it had limited powers, he said, adding that a change should be brought about in the prevailing situation to ensure an all-round development.

Responding to a plea made by secretary of Puducherry unit of the Communist Party of India N.Kalainathan who had referred to the Chief Secretary’s reported remark that the Union Territory Government should seek the Centre’s sanction for spending more than Rs.10 crore on projects, he said such utterances of officials came in the way of the development of Puducherry.

However, the Chief Minister made it clear that the Union Territory government had been taking all possible steps to fulfil the schemes announced by it. The Government had also been striving to ensure that its announcements made during an Assembly session were implemented before the next session of the House.

Mr.Rangasamy commended the efforts of the V.V.Giri National Labour Institute and the Puducherry Vivasaya Thozhilalar Sangam in conducting the four-day workshop. Such programmes to promote leadership qualities in the farming community assumed significance, as they helped them to scale greater heights in the agricultural sector. Such programmes were needed for other sectors also, he said.
