CPI sees threat to Left unity

Alleges bid by CPI(M) to belittle CPI

CPI Alappuzha district conference begins today

ALAPPUZHA: Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretariat member T. Purushottaman on Monday criticised the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday, alleging that certain actions and statements of CPI(M) leaders threatened to disintegrate the Left Democratic Front (LDF).

Leak

Addressing a press conference here to announce the CPI Alappuzha district conference at Kayamkulam from February 5 to 8, Mr. Purushottaman said the leak of the CPI(M)’s annual report to the media during the party’s recent district conference at Cherthala was a tactic to insult the CPI. Excerpts from the report that referred to the CPI as a party without significant strength in Alappuzha were leaked to certain newspapers, he alleged.

“That should not have been done. Such discussions were not appropriate and on the other hand, if the leak was not purposeful, the CPI(M) should have come out with a clarification. It did not do that either. Such moves would only harm the LDF unity and disintegrate the Front, particularly in the district,” the senior leader said.

The CPI’s “crumbling” alliance with the CPI (M), its opposition to the CPI (M)’s violation of LDF policies on the industrial and educational sectors and ways to strengthen the CPI in the district would be discussed during the district conference.

Programmes

On Tuesday, a Red Flag rally would begin from the Vayalar Martyrs’ Memorial while a banner from renowned Communist Thoppil Bhasi’s residence at Vallikkunnam would also be flagged on the same day. The delegates’ session will be inaugurated on February 6 by C.K. Chandrappan, MP. Pannian Raveendran, K.E. Ismail, MPs; Mr. Purushottaman; and C.R. Chandramohan will address the session.

CPI State secretary Veliyam Bhargavan will inaugurate a public meeting on February 8 after a Red Volunteer Parade, which would have more than 50,000 participants. The meeting would be followed by the staging of KPAC’s latest drama Asthamikatha Suryan.
