Day-long training programme organised for teachers

Teachers will train students to plan study time

CHENNAI: As the count down for this year’s public examinations begins, students of Classes X and XII are gearing up with practice question papers and revision tests.

In the run up to the public examinations scheduled to be held this March, it is not just students, but also teachers who seem to be working hard.

Teachers of government and Corporation schools in the city will be giving intensive coaching to their Class X and XII students over the next few weeks.

They recently participated in a day-long training programme organised exclusively for English, Science and Mathematics teachers handling Class X, and the Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Commerce teachers, handling Class XII sections respectively. Department officials said these subjects had higher number of failures when compared to other subjects.

Officials received instructions from School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu and directors to study each school’s performance last year and identify specific areas that needed special attention.

Following this exercise, a list showing the number of failures was prepared for every subject.

“We asked teachers to train students to plan their study time and also attempt sufficient number of previous years’ question papers so that the fear of the examination is eliminated,” an official said.

Director of School Education D. Jagannathan said the initiative was to help students perform better.

The Chief Educational Officer in Chennai and respective District Educational Officers in other districts organised such programmes, he said.

Next academic year, things may look different as Mr. Thennarasu recently announced that the Class X syllabus of the State Board will undergo changes from 2008-09.

The decision was aimed at reducing the burden on students.
