HP laser printers harness web connectivity

BANGALORE: Once it was all about printers. Then in the 1990s it was all about printing per se. Now printer manufacturers are reinventing their offerings all over again — harnessing the Internet to web-enable the entire digital imaging process.

On Monday, Hewlett Packard unveiled two laser printers for the shared corporate environment. The laser printers incorporate many new web-centric features that are being collectively called Print 2. — a reflection of the web’s second version , Web 2.0.

The P1505 series Laserjet has the first print out in less than 6.5 seconds to give average speeds of 24 prints a minute. Different models cost Rs. 9,999 and Rs. 14,999 — the latter compatible with Linux.

The M 2727 series is a multifunction print-scar-fax-copy machine that allows direct emailing of a scanned document. Models are priced between Rs. 45,000 and Rs. 55,000.

‘Smart’ cartridge technology monitors and optimises toner usage in both models.

In a briefing for The Hindu, Samir Shah, HP India’s Director, Commercial and Enterprise Printing, explained that the new Web-based features included, downloadable ‘universal’ drivers for a whole class of printers; free online tools and templates to help small enterprises create their own professional documentation; and ‘smart web printing’ software that makes printing web pages more efficient.
