Exporter gets bail
New Delhi: An exporter, arrested while allegedly trying to smuggle in four high-end Swiss watches into the country, was granted bail by a court here after depositing Rs.22.5 lakh as a condition for enlargement. Ashok Kumar Jain, an exporter of apparel to European countries, was asked by a sessions court to deposit the sum, which included the customs duty for the articles and penalty for the alleged offence, with the designated magistrate court to secure his release after four days of custody.
Adhering to the court’s direction, Jain then deposited the bail amount before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) A K Kuhar on Friday.
Jain, a well-known exporter, was intercepted by Customs officials at IGI Airport here on January 28 when he allegedly walked out of the green channel without declaring dutiable goods worth Rs 31 lakh.
Jain was forced to approach the sessions court after the ACMM had refused to enlarge him on bail. - PTI
