CHAMARAJANAGAR: Chamarajanagar MP M. Shivanna has said the conversion of metre gauge to broad gauge railway line on Chamarajanagar-Mysore railway route will be completed in March/April 2008.

Addressing presspersons after reviewing the progress of the broad gauge conversion work here on Monday, he said the railway authorities will take another three to four months to complete the work between Chamarajanagar and Nanjangud.

First phase

He said at the first phase, the broad gauge railings had been erected between Mysore and Nanjangud. He added that people could expect that the trains would be ready to run between Mysore and Nanjangud shortly.

Work done

Mr. Shivanna said of the sanctioned six Railway Over Bridge (ROB) works, five of them had been completed so far. The one remaining will be completed soon.

He said he had proposed to the Railway authorities to take up the construction of an ROB at Mariyala, Panyadahundi and Chinnadagudihundi. But the work was pending because the State Government had not released the necessary grants to take up the railway over bridge works.

Funds

He said the Railway ministry had sanctioned Rs. 85.36 crore for the Mysore-Chamarajanagar gauge conversion, but the project cost had been revised to Rs. 197 crore. Of the revised Rs. 197 crore, he said so far Rs. 150 crore had been spent for the conversion.

Under bridges

He pointed out that there were 66 Railway Under Bridges (RUB) between Mysore and Chamarajanagar.

More than two-thirds of the minor bridges had been completed.

The construction of major bridges were in good progress.

He said the CHESCOM has to shift high-tension power lines near Mariyala gate. He said the Railways is ready to give Rs. 1.5 lakh shifting charges to CHESCOM. The Railways had planned to construct three platforms at Chamarajanagar Railway Station.

Appeal by sangha

The Raitha Sangha members, who were present during the review of the work, alleged that the Railway authorities had not laid the approach road near Mariyala gate. They said the approach road to their agriculture fields had been acquired by Railway authorities to lay new railway rails. But they neglected to make a provisional approach road.

Request

Their request had been pending for the last two and half years, the sangha said. Mr. Shivanna assured the farmers that steps would be taken to provide a new approach road to their lands.

Deputy Chief Engineer of Railways, Mysore Division, Raman; the Assistant Executive Engineer of construction, Jayaram Reddy and others were present.
