Cement at subsidised rate

The Tamil Nadu Cements Corporation has announced that building contractors, persons involved in construction activities and general public can register their requirements with TANCEM and the minimum requirement should be 480 bags at Rs.160 per bag. This will facilitate the contractors and big builders to get the imported cement in a large quantity and divert them to the needy in piecemeal at an exorbitant rate. This black marketing can not be ruled out. In respect of subsidised-cement also those who are constructing small houses below 1000 sq.ft. and carrying out repair works to their houses or other structures can not get their quantum of cement due to the cumbersome instructions imposed by the Government. Hence the Government should take necessary action to simplify the hard and fast rules.

G. Nagasamy,

Ramanathapuram.

Check dams

The Government has announced to construct check dams across rivers, odai and water course areas. In Paramakudi the Vaigai is the only source for drinking water. There is no facility to preserve the floodwater. I request the authorities concerned to construct a check dam near Paramakudi at Urapuli or at Thelichathanallur to store the water which will raise the ground water level. Will the authorities construct a check dam?

V. Rajendran,

Paramakudi.

Ground level reservoir

The announcement made during the course of the Governor’s address in the Assembly that an expert committee would be formed to study the scheme to save surplus water of rivers draining into the sea is a welcome decision and it is the need of the hour. In Ramanathapuram, the Sakkaraikottai tank gets surplus water almost every year in huge quantity during the monsoon. I appeal to the Chief Minister to convert the Sakkaraikottai tank into a ground-level reservoir.

Haji Asmabagh Anavardeen,

Ramanathapuram.

Giant hoardings

In the vicinity of Periyar bus stand, giant vinyl hoardings are erected. People urinate behind the ‘secluded spaces’ behind these hoardings. One can see it near Kattabomman statue, Lutheran church and the unused foot-overbridge. This results in stench pervading the whole area. I request the authorities concerned to press the sanitary and public health department staff into service and make the place neat.

S.N.M.T. Nagarajan,

Madurai.
