Bhubaneswar: Utkal Sammilani, which had played a pivotal role in formation of separate Orissa state, on Monday sought President Pratibha Patil’s intervention for scrapping of Polavaram hydro electric project in Andhra Pradesh saying it would submerge vast areas in Orissa. In a memorandum to the President, Utkal Sammilani also demanded recognition of Oriya language as second government language in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand and installation of a statue of Madhusudan Das on Parliament house premises. Seeking cancellation of Polavorum project on the river Godavari, it said the project would create problems for the people in Orissa, particularly in Motu tahsil in Kalimela block of Malkangiri district. About 12 villages along with schools, hospital and government office buildings would be submerged and many panchayats of the tahsil would be severely affected and the map of orissa get changed if the project is launched, it said. Therefore, the project should be cancelled immediately or arrangements made not to affect the interests of people of Malkangiri district, said the memorandum, forwarded through the Governor. PTI
