The cows died reportedly after consuming expired drugs on the riverside CUTTACK: Shocked by the death of six cows reportedly after consuming expired drugs from the riverside in the city on Sunday, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation on Monday formed a special squad to identify the culprit who had tried to destroy the drugs in an unscientific manner. “We have formed a squad of drugs inspectors to identify the culprit for whose negligent action, the six cows died while about 20 others fell sick”, said the CMC health officer Niranjan Das on Monday. Meanwhile, the sick cattle that were provided immediate treatment after the incident were now recuperating, said the Cuttack district chief veterinary officer Laxman Behera. There has not been any further causality, he added. The State Pollution Control Board scientists on Monday collected the sample of the contaminated water and have sent them for laboratory test. Similarly, the drug controller also sent a team of drug inspectors to collect the drugs, which were carelessly thrown, into the river waters. At least six cows had died on Sunday and several others were taken ill after either consuming the drugs or the contaminated water of Mahanadi river near Gadagadia temple. Even the aquatic creatures including fishes were found dead floating in the river water. Meanwhile, the district collector Sujata Karthikeyan visited the spot on Monday and the district administration asked the local inhabitants not to let their cattle go near the river water.
