BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday ordered initiation of criminal proceedings against the former Secretary of Sujanpur Cooperative Society in Jajpur district where a farmer had committed suicide on January 30. A debt-burdened farmer, Nabaghana Sahu, had committed suicide on the verandah of the society office building by consuming poison. The Chief Minister ordered action against the former Secretary of the Society after receiving a report on the suicide incident from the District Collector of Jajpur. Mr. Patnaik further ordered an inquiry into all the loans reimbursed by the Society during the tenure of the former Secretary. The inquiry would be conducted by the State Agriculture Production Commissioner and the report of the inquiry be submitted within a month. The Chief Minister further directed that all the loan recovery notices issued by the Society should be kept in abeyance till the Agriculture Production Commissioner submited his report to the government. The victim farmer had reportedly utilised a farm loan of Rs. 800 in 1993 and paid back a portion of the loan. However, a day before he committed suicide an office-bearer of the society had reportedly reached his house in Raghunathpur village and asked him to pay back an amount of Rs. 8,505. Reports said that the former secretary of the society had been absconding since the day of the suicide.
