Easy reach: The Backward Classes Minister, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, handing over bicycles to students in Virudhunagar on Monday. The Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, centre, looks on. VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Minister for Backward Classes, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, distributed free bicycles to 819 students of three higher secondary schools on Monday. Addressing a function at the Government Higher Secondary School at Palavanatham, the Minister said that a total of 17,707 bicycles would be distributed to students in the district at a cost of Rs.3.88 crore. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi would support all the efforts of the students to excel in their academic ventures. Mr. Ramachandran said that twelve classrooms, a laboratory and toilet facilities would be provided at a cost of Rs.60 lakh. Besides, the girls’ hostel run by the Backward Classes Department would be upgraded at a cost of Rs.80 lakh. House site pattas givenThe Minister handed over pattas for free house sites, each measuring 100 square metres, to 78 families. The Backward Classes Department had bought private land measuring 1.32 hectares at a cost of Rs.1.80 lakh. The State Government was providing all help to students, like free textbooks, uniform and noon-meal to promote education, the Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, said. He asked the students to make the most of those facilities to come up in life. The Chief Educational Officer, S. Nagaraja Murugan, also spoke.
