Mushrooming colonies sans proper drainage in Manapparai

M. Balaganessin

Poor financial resources a major factor for municipality’s inaction

HEALTH HAZARD: Sewage water stagnating at Rajiv Nagar in Manapparai.

MANAPPARAI: Mushroom growth of residential colonies in Manapparai municipal town has resulted in lack of civic facilities.

Although the municipal authorities are taking efforts to provide basic amenities, they are unable to keep pace with the rate of growth of the new colonies mainly due to paucity of funds.

A case in point is Rajiv Nagar in Ward 20, which has been witnessing tremendous expansion in the last five years.

A large number of houses were constructed in the colony, making it much sought after by investors. Construction activity is in full swing.

The broad and parallel roads are yet another attraction for investors.

Although the municipality has provided civic facilities, especially a drainage system, to all houses constructed till a couple of years ago, it can now no longer afford to improve the civic amenities despite the fact that the colony is undergoing further expansion.

Residents say stagnation of sewage water poses a health hazard. The problem worsened during monsoon.

Sensing the investors’ demand, a dealer in real estate business donated about 32 cents to the municipality for provision of drainage facility.

He registered his donation, assigning the piece of land in favour of the municipality. But the local body is yet to accept the gift.

Councillor S. Raman of All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam says the residents are hard hit because of poor drainage facility in his ward. The authorities’ reluctance to accept the donation was quite indicative of the civic body’s poor financial resources.

Municipal Commissioner K. Rajan said a few developmental works needed to be carried out in the area before providing drainage facility.

A discussion on accepting the donation was on with the higher officials, the Commissioner added..
