Tamil Nadu
In the name of celebrating birthdays of their leaders, the two main Dravidian parties, DMK and AIADMK, put up hoardings/flex-boards of various sizes, with their pictures and eulogising them in hyperbolic language. They are found almost everywhere in Madurai. While the parties have the prerogative to praise their leaders to the skies, they obviously do not have any right to inconvenience the public in any way in the process. These hoardings/flex-boards do constitute a hindrance to pedestrians and to the travelling public alike. Moreover, it is in blatant violation of the recent Madras High Court order banning erection of such structures in public places. Unfortunately, the law enforcing authorities and the civic administration have failed to enforce this order. As such, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court could take suo motu notice of this brazen violation of its order and help bring some order in public life in Madurai. D. Samuel Lawrence, Madurai Make EB billing period monthlyTamil Nadu Electricity Board collects electricity charges once in two months. After computerisation of its accounts, the EB staff seldom visit houses on a fixed date or period for taking metre reading. They visit as per their convenience. In January, they took the reading on 30th, instead of 20th or 21st. Because of this delay and irregular calculations, the customers pay in excess since the reading goes to a higher slab. To avoid this, billing should be made every month on the lines of telephone bill. If brought into effect, customers will stand to benefit from reduced billing amount. Because, the tariff for 100 units is Rs. 120 while it is Rs. 390 for 200 units. If paid every month for 100 units, it will be only Rs.240. But now we are paying extra Rs.150. This type of excess billing by a Government undertaking is not justifiable. R. Ramanathan, Madurai No space for parking carsKrishnarayar Teppakulam Street has become one of the busiest roads in Madurai. There are hospitals, offices, houses and so many cellphone shops on this stretch. The traffic police previously earmarked parking of two-wheelers on one side of the road and cars on the other side. But all of a sudden car parking has been prohibited, causing inconvenience to the public. Moreover, the traffic police have not made alternative arrangements for car parking. May I request the police department to take appropriate steps to provide space for car parking. R.G. Rethinam, Madurai Hoardings near Periyar bus standIn the vicinity of Periyar bus stand, giant vinyl hoardings are erected. People urinate behind the ‘secluded spaces’ behind these hoardings. One can see it near Kattabomman statue, Lutheran church and the unused foot-overbridge. This result in stench pervading the whole area. I request the authorities concerned to press the sanitary and public health department staff into service and make the place neat. S.N.M.T. Nagarajan, Madurai Bad roadThe stretch of road between K. Pudur Moondrumavadi and Kannanendhal is in a bad condition. Vehicles passing through this road encounter great difficulty. I request the authorities to take patch works immediately. N.S. Raj, Madurai Pay Commission recommendationIt is learnt that the Centre is urging the Pay Commission formed an year back to see to that its recommendations are implemented from January, 2008 with 3.5 percent increase. Since the cost of living is increasing day by day, I hope that the Tamil Nadu Government also follows suit. It is regretful to note that in spite of the recommendations of the last Pay Commission led by retired Chief Justice S. Ratnavel Pandian, medical allowance has not been increased. The present rate of Rs.50, existing for more than five years, should be increased to Rs.100 and given not only to serving personnel but also to pensioners also. M. Muthuramalingam, Madurai
