Just not right

There is a sign board for vehicles coming from the court/Aiyappa temple that right turn is prohibited near Ratna Global Hospital on Pattabiraman Salai. However, late in the evening, most of the two-wheelers take right turn and proceed ahead.

Sometimes, even four-wheelers violate the rule without worrying much about the vehicles proceeding towards the court.

Police authorities should take steps to educate drivers on the need to follow the rules to prevent accidents.

Need for First Aid box

While I was getting into a private bus running between Tiruchi and Mannargudi, my finger brushed against a sharp edge of the bus and started bleeding. I asked the conductor for a piece of cotton to arrest the flow. He could not even hear my voice because of the blaring sound system.

I noticed there was no First Aid box in the bus.

I wish the bus owners would take steps to keep First Aid boxes in addition to the television sets and DVD player.

Don’t preach, practise

“Road Safety Week” is observed only in theory (all those banners) and not in practice. There is congestion everywhere. For example:,the bus stop at TVS Tollgate, where buses proceed to the airport. There is a long stretch along the State Express Bus Depot, which has a shelter. The authorities should make an effort to shift the bus stand at the centre for easy flow of traffic.

‘Improve amenities’

A considerable number of foreign tourists visit Srirangam almost every day. Sincere efforts should be taken to see that they carry with them pleasant memories and a good impression about our State and country.

At present, they have to struggle on many fronts. Bead-sellers mob the tourists, demanding hefty and unreasonable prices. Beggars’ nuisance is unbearable.

The tourists definitely deserve better treatment and protection. It would be ideal if an exclusive counter is provided at the temple entrance for foreigners with trained guides.

Soft drinks and booklets highlighting our culture, tradition, places of interest in the State can be offered free of cost. Exclusive provision of shoe racks and toilets should also be made.

Poor drainage

Viswasnagar in Karumandapam area, with about 2,000 houses, is sandwiched between the railway embankment, the lake-bund, GST Road and Koraiyar embankment. Even normal rain during winter is enough to flood the area as the outlet under GST Road is inadequate. The lake gets filled up quickly during the monsoon.

It is a serious problem for residents at Karumandapam as the outlet from the lake adjacent to National College has been completely closed. There is a small drainage from the railway embankment passing through Viswasnagar, which is unable to drain all water effectively as water from the southern side of the track is also allowed to flow into the channel through a conduit under the track. The drainage system needs urgent attention.

Nausea in buses

Airliners have bags to help passengers suffering from nausea. I recently travelled in a government bus to Chennai, which took eight hours. The journey was comfortable. En route, my fellow traveller suddenly felt queasy. He vomited under his seat. There was discomfort all round because of the unpleasant odour. Hence, plastic bags can be provided in buses.

Rash driving

Rash driving of buses is a nightmare on Chennai Bypass Road. Now, four-lane work is under progress and there is no space for cyclists to get down from the road. So, the traffic authorities must take steps to curb rash driving of vehicles, mainly at night.
