Ramnath, Bharathi win

Chennai: SBOA’s Ramnath Bhuvanesh and R. Bharathi (Bhaktavathchalam) won the under-15 boys’ and girls’ titles respectively in the Tata Indicom second State-level rapid children’s chess tournament, organised by the Anna Nagar Chess Academy.

Ramnath scored nine points, while Bharathi scored five-and-a-half.

India Cements in last four

India Cements (Chennai) ended the giant-killing run of local side Globstar Telecom with a 87-victory and marched into the semifinals of the 21st BPCL Kochi Refinery all-India cricket tournament at the BPCL Ground, Ambalamugal, Kochi, on Monday.

Earlier, Indian Bank failed to capitalise on captain P. Satheesh’s sparkling 61 (46bs, 9x4) and folded up at 131.

Vijaya Bank did not face much trouble in reaching the target with Shyam Ponnappa (33) and C.M. Goutham (38) making the bulk of the runs.

The scores: Quarterfinals: India Cements (Chennai) 216 for seven in 30 overs (Varun Kumar 69, Thalaivan 49) bt Globstar Telecom (Ernakulam) 129 in 24.2 overs (S. Suresh Kumar five for 40).

Indian Bank (Chennai) 131 in 24.4 overs (P. Satheesh 61) lost to Vijaya Bank (Bangalore) 136 for three in 20.2 overs.

Century by Siddarth

A fine knock of 139 by opener A. Siddarth and an effective unbeaten 71 by R. Hari Prasad saw host Coimbatore gain an early command over Kancheepuram on the opening day of the TNCA under-19 inter-district cricket final at Coimbatore on Monday.

The scores: Final: Coimbatore 312 for six in 90 overs (A. Siddarth 139, R. Hari Prasad 71 not out, K.M. Nazar four for 43).
