NEW DELHI: The Gurgaon police are planning to seek the custody of Upender, the doctor arrested in connection with the illegal kidney transplant racket, to corroborate the disclosure made by Harpal, the driver of the prime accused Amit Kumar, that personnel of the Crime Branch of the Delhi police had picked them up for interrogation in January this year and subsequently let them off. According to the Gurgaon police, Upender could be of help in identification of the personnel of the Crime Branch of the Delhi police. “Harpal has disclosed that Upender would be able to identify those who had picked them up and taken them to New Delhi,” said a police officer, adding that through Upender, they would collect more valuable information on Amit’s background. Harpal had allegedly told the Gurgaon police that he and Upender were let off after Amit paid about Rs.18 lakh to the policemen for their release. In the wake of the alleged disclosure by Harpal, it is learnt that senior Department officers have sought details from the subordinates about the personnel who were on duty the day the incident allegedly took place. Raids are being mounted to track down the three most wanted persons — Amit, his brother Jeevan and Saraj Kumar. “There has not been any breakthrough. However, we suspect that Saraj is hiding in some nearby place,” the police officer said.
