Priest’s death: TDB directed to inquire into allegation of graft

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Devaswom Minister G.Sudhakaran has directed the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) to look into allegations of corruption and violation of norms in transfer of temple employees.

In a pressnote issued here on Monday, he said the Devaswom Vigilance had started investigation into the death of E.Sankaran Nambooithiri, Melshanthi of the Kammattam Mahaganapathy Temple in the city, following allegations that he had committed suicide. “The Melshanthi’s wife had complained that her husband was driven to death by the harassment of senior TDB officials. The report of the vigilance probe will be submitted to the Home department for further action. I am hopeful that a Crime Branch investigation would be ordered.”

The Minister said he had received reports of temple employees being indiscriminately transferred for the failure to grease the palms of a section of Devaswom officials. He asked the TDB to strengthen the Vigilance wing. “Creating hurdles to the functioning of the Vigilance wing will only encourage corruption in the department.”
