KOCHI: K.S. Radhakrishnan, Vice-Chancellor, of the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, has called for setting up a Ministry for Fisheries at the Centre. In his address at the valedictory session of the diamond jubilee of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Dr. Radhakrishnan suggested that a separate Ministry was required for addressing the issues faced by the fisheries sector of the country. At present, matters of the fisheries sector were dealt by ministries such as Commerce, Industry and Agriculture resulting in ineffective development. There was also the need for massive extension activities as well as contextualisation of the research outcomes to ensure that the knowledge generated by research institutions reached the fisher folk, he said. N.G.K. Pillai, Director of the institute, highlighted the thrust areas of the Institute. Earlier, an open-house was held for schoolchildren.
