Crisis facing Ashta Maths resolved

Staff Correspondent

Udupi: The crisis facing the Ashta Maths consequent to the ascension of Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji of Puttige Math to the “Paryaya Peetha” on January 18, on issues such as worshipping Lord Krishna at Sri Krishna Math/Temple and a constitution for the maths, was resolved here on Monday. While Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math has been more forthcoming in supporting the Puttige seer on the issue of “Krishna Puja’, five seers of the Ashta Maths – Vidyasagara Tirtha Swamiji of Krishnapur Math; Vidyadheesha Tirtha Swamiji of Palimar Math; Vidyavallabha Tirtha Swamiji of Kaniyur Math; Vishwavallabha Tirtha Swamiji of Sode Vadiraja Math; and Vishwapriya Tirtha Swamiji, junior seer of Admar Math have offered conditional support to the Puttige seer.

In a press release issued here, Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji said the Puttige seer had agreed to his main suggestions on Krishna Puja and a constitution for the Ashta Maths, and hence he would perform puja to Lord Krishna on the days of his (Pejawar seer’s) convenience during the Puttige seer’s Paryaya. The seer hoped that the remaining swamijis of the Ashta Maths would also cooperate in the matter. However, in a joint statement, the swamijis of Krishnapur, Kaniyur, Sode Vadiraja, and the junior seer of Admar Math said that “the Puttige seer had ascended the Paryaya Peetha on January 18, 2008, in violation of “shastras,” traditions, and the majority decision of the Ashta Maths. We are ready to cooperate with the Puttige seer in doing “Krishna Puja” so long as he does not touch the idol.”

The Palimar seer has issued a separate press release, which supports the views of the last four seers of the Ashta Maths.
