Krishnagiri: Members of the Communist Party of India (M) staged road-blockades in various parts of Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts on Tuesday urging the Union and State Governments to take steps to control the prices of essential commodities. The prices of agrarian commodities have also increased manifold. The Congress led United Progressive Alliance government had failed to check the spiralling prices of essential commodities.

Efforts should be initiated to increase the agricultural productivity in the country in the interest of farmers and consumers. Members raised slogans highlighting problems faced by the people due to the price hike. They also pointed out the increase in the prices of construction materials including cement, steel and sand had rendered many labourers jobless. Similar protests were organized in Hosur, Uthangarai, Dharmapuri, Palacode and Harur. More than 1,000 cadres were arrested and later released in the evening.
