Comprehensive portal for School Education Department soon

CHENNAI: The School Education Department will soon have a comprehensive portal providing information on its academic and administrative wings.

School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu is leading a seven-member team working on the initiative aimed at a smooth and transparent e-governance system. The team, which has been compiling data from the districts, comprises software professionals, senior officials and headmasters.

“The idea is to connect all schools to the Directorates they fall under and then to the Secretariat. We are making it very interactive,” Mr. Thennarasu told The Hindu .

In the next few days, the Department will appoint a Deputy Director for e-governance to ensure effective operation of the portal.

Currently in its final stages, the portal aims at providing details on all components within the purview of the School Education Department. From budgetary allocations, data on establishment, statistical data, teacher vacancies and school profiles to student and teacher profiles, infrastructure, application forms for examinations and government schemes. It has been designed with ideas drawn from some of the best portals on education.

Each and every student of government, government-aided or private schools will be featured. The students will be profiled individually with details such as school, district, class, and blood group. The student’s ID will be exclusive and, when entered, will generate all the details.

Similarly, locating a local body school in a remote village will take only a few seconds. Along with the school’s name, details such as number of students, number of sections and pass percentage recorded in previous years will be available. Statistical information has been presented as tables, pie charts and graphs.

Interestingly, the section on infrastructure will show what each school needs. “Government schools have produced very good students who are doing very well in their careers now. Many of them ask us how they contribute to their school,” an official said.

Alumni interested in contributing to their alma mater can visit this section, which shows specific requirements of each school and the estimated cost. They can even make the payment online and receive updates on how their contribution helped.

Periodical updates on activities of the department, new initiatives and information on libraries will also be available. “We already have the EDUSAT programme running. Now our aim is to go to the grassroots and include all the schools in this project,” said Mr. Thennarasu.
