dated February 6, 1958: Freedom Day in Ceylon

Pealing of temple bells and special church services heralded the tenth anniversary celebrations of Ceylon Independence in Colombo on February 4. The highlight of the celebrations was a march-past and drill display by 1,500 school children drawn from over 60 schools in Colombo at the Independence Square, in the heart of the city. A crowd estimated at 3,00,000 witnessed the drill display which was followed by Kandyan dances and folk songs.
