CHENNAI: Alpha Arts and Science College marked its decennial year by holding various events on Friday and Saturday. United States Consul-General in Chennai David T. Hopper inaugurated the celebrations, in which Madras University Vice-Chancellor S. Ramachandran was the guest of honour. On the occasion, the college conferred a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ on former Central Vigilance Commissioner N. Vittal. Alpha Distinguished Citizen Awards were also presented to eminent personalities. As part of its celebrations, the college conducted several plenary sessions on various subjects, such as biomedical sciences, electronics, communication, information technology, commerce, media and governance. Central Leather Research Institute director A.B. Mandal delivered a lecture on ‘paradigm shift from chemicals to bio-processing of leather’. Indian Institute of Technology professor David Kovilpillai spoke about the trends in the telecom industry and its relevance to the common man. Inspector-General of Police Prateep Philip, who led the discussion on commerce, media and governance, emphasised the need for proactive participation of citizens in governance. The plenary sessions concluded with a panel discussion, chaired by Vivek Harinarain, former Information Technology Secretary. Former Orissa Governor M.M. Rajendran was the guest of honour at the valedictory function. Faculty members, principal Celestina Jayasingh, managing director Suja George and chairperson Grace George participated.
