Tiruchi
discussion: Alexander M. Dubianski, Professor of Tamil, Moscow University, interacting with students in Tiruchi on Tuesday. TIRUCHI: A presentation in chaste Tamil commanded the entire attention of the audience comprising students of Tamil Literature at the Bharathidasan University, on Tuesday. The Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko, the Director of the Centre for Research S.S. Ramar Ilango, and some senior professors too joined the students in admiring the speaker. Behind the mike was an enthusiastic Alexander M. Dubianski, Professor of Tamil, Moscow University, relishing the opportunity to delve into the richness of Tamil literature. Prof. Alexander had evinced interest in learning Tamil in 1965, by when Tirukkural and Silappadhikaram were translated into Russian language. From then began his tryst with Tamil, which, he refers to as a knowledgeable language with vast scope for research. It is a language through which deep thoughts could be expressed effectively, says Prof. Alexander, who had himself translated Sangam literature in 1969. Along with his five students, he had visited Tamil Nadu last year to have a feel of the Tamil culture and its rich traditions. No wonder, he is a typical Tamilian in mannerisms. After ending his presentation with verses of Sangam poetry, Prof. Alexander was quite amiable with students who swarmed him for autographs. Presiding over, the Vice-Chancellor observed that it was time people in Tamil Nadu realised the importance of mother tongue, against the backdrop of the language being held with high esteem worldwide.
