STF to lean on district police

Special Correspondent

YERCAUD: The Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order), K. Vijayakumar, has said that the Special Task Force (STF), which is continuing its anti-naxal and anti-poaching operations in the forests of Theni in South and Salem and Krishnagiri in the West Zone, will draw support from the commando-trained district police units for a ‘localised quick reaction in times of grave nature’.

The STF is already coordinating with the State Q Branch.

The ADGP, participating in the valedictory function of the special training programme for local police personnel here on Tuesday, said the primary objective of training local policemen in jungle operations was to ensure quick action to the emergency operations.

Instead of waiting for the arrival of STF teams, these policemen who had been selected from the line-up of the respective district units could act quickly against any unlawful activity. Declining to comment on the recent arrests of LTTE men in the State, Mr. Vijayakumar said that the operations against anti-nationals were continuing. “We now train the local police in conserving the flora and fauna. Such trainings will also be held in the north and central zones,” he said.

12-day training

The 12-day training module for 160 policemen in Salem included handling of modern weapons, mental and physical stabilities and information gathering. A district would have two sub-inspectors and 36 constables as quick reaction teams.

The trained policemen trekked the Yercaud Hills where senior officers including IG (STF), A. Alexander Mohan, IG (West Zone), Sanjay Arora, DIG (Salem), N. Chenbhagaraman, Salem SP, N. Bhaskaran, and STF SP, Pon Manickavel, received them. Best performers were honoured.
