BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Monday adjourned a petition by Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise Limited (NICE) challenging a notification for acquisition of land in Bangalore north for widening the national highway. In its petition, NICE said it wanted the land at Madavara village in Bangalore north for constructing ramps to the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor Project and also for creating infrastructure for the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC). NICE said the exhibition centre is part of the corridor project and that it had sought land at the village for vehicle parking. It said the centre would be open 100 days in a year and there would be a requirement for parking of 25,000 to 30,000 cars on land adjoining the centre. It said the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) had issued a notification for acquiring the land for widening NH 4. It said it would be difficult to provide infrastructural facilities to the centre if the land was acquired by the KIADB. NICE urged the court to quash the notification. Justice Ashok B. Hinchigeri adjourned further hearing on the case. AdjournedThe Karnataka High Court on Monday sought from the State Government why it could not make it mandatory for all transport vehicles plying in Karnataka to install speed governors. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph and Justice B.S. Patil made the observation when dealing with a public interest litigation (PIL) petition for quashing a recent notification by the State extending till April the time for old vehicles to install speed governors. When the matter came up, Advocate-General B.V. Acharya submitted that the notification extended time for only old vehicles and new vehicles would have to install speed governors if they were to be registered. The Chief Justice wanted to know the justification in extending the time. He said the High Court had already extended time for old vehicles once. “When social measures are taken, we should not kneel down. I know what has happened. Is it money power or muscle power that made the Government to gibe in to the demand of truckers?” he asked. DismissedJustice Ravi B. Naik on Monday dismissed a criminal petition by Norullah Khadri, a resident of Jamkhandi, who had challenged an order in 2007 by a Fast Track Court, Jamkhandi, sentencing him to seven years imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 5,000 for raping a minor schoolgirl. Justice Naik dismissed the appeal by Khadri.
