Good news: D. Uthirakkumaran, Collector, second from right, giving away sports materials to tsunami hit fishermen of Pudukottai district, at Kottaipattinam on Tuesday. PUDUKOTTAI: A total of 2,400 houses will be constructed to benefit the Tsunami-hit fishermen in the coastal parts of Pudukottai district, the Collector D. Uthirakkumaran, said. Speaking at a function to mark the distribution of sports kits as additional relief to the tsunami-hit people, at Manamelkudi village, about 75 km from here on Tuesday, he said that the house, with a plinth area of 320 sq.feet each, would be constructed in a radius 500metres from the shore. Pile foundation technology would be utilised. Referring to a complaint by the Manamelkudi Panchayat union vice-chairman Mohammed Abdullah, he said that all eligible persons would benefit under the housing scheme. In fact, as many as 108 names of beneficiaries from Manamelkudi union would be included shortly. The special aspect was that the houses would be constructed at the same dwelling places where the fishermen were residing at present, without causing any displacement to them. The Collector gave away sports kit that included the carromboards, volley-ball kit including a net, foot-ball, cricket kit including bat. In all 32 villages in 13 village panchayats in and around Manamelkudi got the kit. The MLA, Udhayam Shanmugam; the Deputy Director of Fisheries, Tiruchi, S. Jude and the Assistant Director of Fisheries, Pudukottai, R. Sharmila were among those who participated.
