Bellary
His 444th death anniversary will be observed at Hampi for two days from Thursday BELLARY: Hampi, the erstwhile seat of the Vijayanagar empire, will reverberate to the melodious strains of music and dance, as renowned artistes will pay tribute to Purandara Dasa on his 444th “aradhane” (death anniversary) for two days from Thursday. The music and dance programme will be jointly organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture and the district administration. The celebrations of “Sri Purandara Dasa Aradhane” at Hampi have tremendous significance as the poet saint, who is known as the “father of Carnatic music,” spent a lot of time at the mantap (now named after him). On Thursday, after worshipping the idol of Sri Purandara Dasa, etched on one of the pillars of the Purandara Mantap, located on the banks of the Tungabahdra, mass singing of the “pancha ratna keerthane” will be rendered by V.L. Sudarshan and troupe from Chennai. This is the third consecutive year in which the team will come to Hampi to pay tribute to the poet saint. The “pancha ratna keerthane,” comprising five songs written by Sri Purandara Dasa, were composed in the same ragas of the “pancha ratna krutis” sung during the “Thyagaraja Aradhane,” by Sudarshan and troupe. The same evening, music and dance programmes will be held at the Virupaksha temple in which Muddu Mohan, the former Director of Kannada and Culture; S.V. Srinivas Rao; Savita Nugadoni; S. Shankar; Hanumanna Nayak Dore; Nagapushpalatha Cheluvaraj (all vocalists); and N. Venkatesh and troupe (Pancha piteelu); Shyamala Muralikrishna and troupe (ballet) and Lakshman Dal (Harikatha) will perform.
