Efforts on to check leprosy

Staff Reporter

Kakinada: The rate of prevalence of leprosy in East Godavari district, which was 118 for a population of 10,000 before the multi-drug therapy (MDT) was introduced in 1987, came down to less than one for the same size of population. Efforts are on to prevent its recurrence to the previous levels, said district nodal officer for AIDS and leprosy M Pavan Kumar.

Speaking at the valedictory function of the Leprosy Week here on Tuesday, Kumar said the MDT for leprosy is being offered in Government General Hospital at Kakinada and all area hospitals.

Leprosy, he said, was a bane in the days when there was no proper treatment for it.

Curable ailment

Today, those infected by it need not worry as it has become a completely curable ailment.

Participating as a chief guest, Kakinada MLA Mutha Gopalakrishna said MDT was an effective means of treating leprosy.

District Medical and Health Officer D Vijay Kumar was also present.
