BSNL showcases various features, services at ‘telephone mela’ MANGALORE: Customers of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) in Dakshina Kannada Telecom District may not have to wait for long for advanced features on cellphones and in broadband services. The services such as high speed broadband and television on mobile handsets are in the offing. For cellphone users, the company will introduce resource tracking and management service (RTMS), people finder service (PFS) and television on mobile sets. The broadband users can avail web conferencing facility, shortly. People were inquiring about the new facilities at the “telephone mela” organised by the Dakshina Kannada Telecom District of the BSNL at its Baikampady telephone exchange here on Tuesday. The BSNL showcased the existing and prospective facilities at the mela. “By using the RTMS, also called field tracking management service, and PFS, customers — mainly transport companies, can track the movement of vehicles such as lorries and taxis, by logging on to a website: www:218.248.72.237/RTMS or /PFS. In PFS service, the user can receive information on the mobile set,” said P.R. Bhavanishankar, sub-divisional engineer, mobile service, Mangalore. “With the “mobile TV” service, the customer can view 20 television channels, including a Kannada channel. It is required to have a GPRS-enabled (General Packet Radio Service) mobile phone set to avail these facilities. It is a faster way of passing data over mobile phone network,” he said. The BSNL provided voice and data card service. The roaming facility was restricted to taluk limits, said A.S. Manvi, sub divisional engineer, in-charge of CDMA, Wireless in Loop, Mobile Switch Centre section. P.R. Narayana Pai, Junior Telecom Officer, Internet, said that BSNL would provide broadband facility with 8 mbps speed soon. This would facilitate the industrialists to watch the activities in their factory from their chambers, with the help of a web camera, he said. Visiontek, a Hyderabad-based company, had displayed its fixed wireless phone set to which only SIM card can be inserted. Anil Pinto, proprietor of Highland Computers here, said that senior citizens not acquainted with cellphones could use the fixed wireless unit instead. It has facility to send SMS and it can also be used as a PCO phone.
