They interacted with officials to ascertain strategies adopted in implementation of Total Sanitation Programme
OFFICIAL BRIEFING: Collector Ashish Vachhani with an official team from Himachal Pradesh, in Tiruchi on Tuesday. TIRUCHI: A high-level team from Himachal Pradesh visited Tiruchi on Tuesday to learn the “good and best practices” followed by the district administration in implementation of the Total Sanitation Programme (TSP). The 24-member team, comprising five Collectors, project officers of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) and senior administration officials, visited Kollapatti and Mettupatti villages in Thuraiyur and Thathaiengarpet blocks, where the programme was in vogue, and interacted with the community. Strategies adoptedEarlier, they interacted with officials, representatives of non-government organisations and a select group of local body representatives, ascertaining the strategies adopted in the implementation of the programme. Collector Ashish Vachhani gave the details of the implementation. A few panchayat presidents explained the strategies adopted by them, including door-to-door campaigns highlighting the programme and health hazards caused by open defecation. They stressed on the monitoring mechanism involving self-help group members to ensure whether the beneficiaries used the toilets. M. Subburaman, Director, SCOPE, an NGO, threw light on low cost sanitation technologies and the advantages of eco sanitation toilets. He also spoke about integrated sanitary complexes for women and their maintenance by user groups. The team members said the visit had provided them a chance to learn and try to replicate the strategy in Himachal Pradesh.
