Adhere to truth, Somnath tells media

Special Correspondent

MUMAI: While being independent of the authority in news reporting, the media should not be ‘independent of the truth,’ the Lok Sabha Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee, said on Tuesday. “The fiction can never be news and newspapers are for news; put your views in signed editorials,” he told reporters.

He was addressing a press conference here at the conclusion of the 14th All India Whips’ Conference. His advice included, “do not bring the Page 3 to Page 1” for the latter had its own value and had truth to uphold. Mr. Chatterjee was very unhappy with the media as it always gave prominence to unruly behaviour of lawmakers on the floor of the House. He felt that such reportage encouraged members to indulge in disturbance as that got them media coverage.

He advised the media to inform the people about laws passed so that they could take advantage of them. “How many women are aware of anti-domestic violence law?” he asked. The positive achievements of the legislatures needed to be projected to sustain the parliamentary democracy which was the best choice and had no substitute in his opinion.
