Girl ends life after SI’s remark

Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: Villagers of Singampalli in Atmakur mandal staged a dharna in front of the police station at Atmakur in the district on Tuesday with the body of a girl who committed suicide allegedly due to a remark by SI Mallesappa on Monday.

According to information, two youths belonging to the same caste in the village, Harikrishna and Janaki, had eloped recently and returned home after spending about a week outside. The elders of the village were learnt to have decided to marry off the two after assuring the girl’s family of justice. However, nothing was forthcoming later and the youth left the village calmly. On asking who will marry her if her sister was not married to the boy with whom she had eloped the SI had allegedly told Salamma to follow her elder sister. Unable to bear the insult Salamma consumed a pesticide on Tuesday.
