Courtesy visit: Andreas Carlgren, Swedish Minister for Environment calling on Governor N.D. Tiwari at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday. HYDERABAD: Environment concerns and reduction of the emission of greenhouse gases have been addressed in Sweden by implementing long-term strategies including imposition of carbon tax. Inaugurating a seminar on environmental technology for sustainable urban development, organised by the CII here on Tuesday, Swedish Minister for Environment Andreas Carlgren said that carbon dioxide emissions had been brought down by almost 9 per cent since 1990 when several taxes and incentives were introduced. He recalled that Indira Gandhi, on her return from the United Nation’s human environment conference held in Stockholm in 1972, established a Ministry of Environment and Forests. The challenges confronting India, as explained by Sunita Narain to him, were humbling, yet Mr. Carlgren expressed confidence that India could deal with them. A partnership agreement for capacity-building on cleaner production in Hyderabad region was signed by Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Environment Protection Training & Research Institute (EPTRI). New solutions will be introduced in the Patancheru area. He said India and Sweden could work together on several clean development mechanism (CD<) projects .
